GLP-1 Weight-Loss Medication in Canada (2026): Costs, Coverage and How to Get a Prescription Online
GLP-1 weight-loss medicines explained in plain language: 2026 costs from about $88 a month, what OHIP and insurance cover, and how to get a prescription online.

GLP-1 medicines are prescription drugs that lower your appetite so you feel full sooner and eat less. They work by copying a natural hormone your gut makes. In 2026, Canada has approved two main medicines for weight loss, and a new generic version is now available, making treatment more affordable. If you are thinking about trying one, here is what you should know.
How GLP-1 medicines work
GLP-1 is a hormone your body makes when you eat. It tells your brain you are full. It also slows how fast food moves through your stomach. GLP-1 medicines do the same thing.
There are two kinds:
- Semaglutide copies one gut hormone. It is sold as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and as Wegovy for weight loss.
- Tirzepatide copies two gut hormones. It is sold as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and as Zepbound for weight loss.
Both are injections you give yourself once a week. When you take one of these medicines, you get hungry less often. You eat smaller meals and feel satisfied sooner. The result is eating fewer calories without feeling as deprived.
What the medicines cost in Canada in 2026
Prices vary by pharmacy, dose, and how much you buy at once. Pharmacies may offer discounts for buying multiple doses ahead of time. This is not financial advice, just what you might expect to pay out of pocket in 2026.
The big change this year is generic semaglutide. Canada became the first G7 country to approve it. The first generic was approved in April 2026, and a second in May 2026. Generics cost much less than brand Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound.
What insurance covers
This is where it gets tricky. Public plans such as Ontario's ODB do not cover GLP-1 medicines for weight loss. They may cover Ozempic if you have type 2 diabetes and meet certain conditions, but not for weight loss alone.
Wegovy and Zepbound are not publicly covered. In December 2025, price talks between Canada's Pharmaceutical Alliance and the maker of Wegovy ended without a deal.
Some private or employer insurance plans may cover part of the cost. It is worth asking your plan or your pharmacy whether your coverage includes any of these medicines.
How much weight can you lose?
In clinical trials, people using these medicines lost between 10 and 20 percent of their starting weight. Zepbound, the newest medicine, showed the most weight loss on average.
Your own results will depend on your body, how strictly you follow diet changes, your exercise, and other health factors. Some people lose more, some lose less. These medicines work best when you also change what you eat and move more.
Who qualifies for a prescription
A clinician considers prescribing these medicines if you are:
- An adult with obesity (a BMI of 30 or higher), or
- A BMI of 27 or higher and a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
Your clinician will look at your full health history and decide if the medicine is safe for you. There are some conditions that rule out these medicines, such as certain thyroid cancers or a personal history of pancreatitis. Your clinician will check for these.
How to get a prescription online safely
Only use services with a real Canadian-licensed clinician who reviews your health before writing a prescription. Avoid compounded GLP-1 products sold without a clinician's sign-off. Health Canada treats most of these as illegal, and there is no approved synthetic form in Canada.
A safe online service works like this:
- You fill out a health questionnaire.
- A Canadian-licensed clinician reviews your answers and your health history.
- If you qualify, the clinician writes a prescription.
- The prescription goes to a pharmacy, and you pick it up or have it delivered.
- You have follow-up check-ins with the clinician.
No safe service gives out medicine without a clinician's review and prescription. If a service does, do not use it.
Generic semaglutide vs. Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound
Generic semaglutide is the same medicine as Ozempic, just made by a different company and usually much cheaper. The doses are the same as Ozempic. The difference is that Wegovy comes in a higher dose (2.4 mg) made specifically for weight loss. The generics do not have that higher dose yet.
If your clinician prescribes generic semaglutide, you will use the lower doses that match Ozempic. For most people, these doses work for weight loss. But if your clinician thinks you need a higher dose, Wegovy is still an option.

The bottom line
GLP-1 medicines can help you lose weight if you have obesity or a weight-related health condition. They are not magic, and they work best with diet and exercise changes. Cost is a real barrier for many people, but generic semaglutide has made treatment more affordable in 2026.
If you are interested, talk to your doctor or use an online clinic with a Canadian-licensed clinician. They can tell you whether one of these medicines is right for you, review the costs, and help you understand what to expect.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I have to take GLP-1 medicine forever?
- Your clinician will work with you to see if a medicine is helping. Some people take it for a season or a year. Others use it long term. If you stop taking it, appetite usually returns over weeks to months. The choice depends on your goals and what your clinician recommends.
- Can I get generic semaglutide prescribed through an online clinic?
- Yes. If you qualify and a clinician approves your prescription, it can be sent to a pharmacy. Many pharmacies now stock generic semaglutide. It costs less than brand Ozempic or Wegovy. Check with your pharmacy about availability and price.
- What happens if I do not eat much on GLP-1 medicine?
- These medicines lower appetite so you feel full sooner, but you still need to eat enough to stay healthy. A clinician or nutritionist can help you plan meals that work with the medicine. Some people feel nausea at first. This usually gets better as your body adjusts.
- How do I know if a telehealth service is safe?
- A safe service has a real Canadian-licensed clinician review your health history and decide if the medicine is right for you. They will not give you a prescription without talking to you first. Avoid any service that sells unregulated compounded products or promises results without a real assessment.
